Granville Oktoberfest Delights over 2,000 Visitors in Unforgettable Celebration

Prost! Over 2,000 community members and visitors gathered in downtown Granville for a festive celebration of German tradition, local flavor, and community spirit at the first-ever Granville Oktoberfest. Organizers are calling the event a resounding success, with plans already underway to bring the festivities back in 2027.
Presented by the Welsh Hills Community Partners, the event brought authentic Bavarian cheer to the heart of Ohio. Generous support from Roof Ohio, the event’s Kaiser Sponsor, made the massive gathering possible, ensuring top-tier entertainment and amenities for attendees of all ages.
A Feast of Bavarian Favorites and Local Brews
Festivalgoers enjoyed an abundance of classic Oktoberfest fare. Plates were packed with slow-cooked pork, tangy sauerkraut, grilled bratwurst, giant warm pretzels, and traditionally decorated Lebkuchenherzen (gingerbread heart necklaces).
To wash down the feast, taps flowed all day with exceptional local craft beers and ciders provided by regional favorites: Three Tigers Brewing Company, The Lot Beer Co., Seek No Further Cidery, and The Granville Brewing Company.
Honor, Music, and Unforgettable Moments
The air was filled with traditional music and dance throughout the day, creating an energetic backdrop for family fun. The late afternoon rain would not dampen the crowd’s spirits, and as the clouds parted the sun brought a surprise highlight when two costumed chickens trotted out into the crowd to lead hundreds of enthusiastic dancers in a giant, joyous Polka Chicken Dance.
A central moment of the day was the official recognition of Granville’s first-ever Mayor of Oktoberfest—the Bürgermeister—Steve Matheny. Matheny was celebrated for his 12 years of dedicated leadership with the Granville Chamber, receiving warm applause from the community he has helped nourish and support. Before he tapped the first keg of the festival, Matheny was honored by event coordinator Sean Jones, who noted "Steve listens, remembers what matters to people, brings the right people together and gets things done without asking for any of the credit."

Competitive spirits flared during the inaugural Oktoberfest Stein Holding Competition (Masskrugstemmen). After intense battles of strength and endurance, the first-ever men’s and women’s champions walked away with bragging rights, custom engraved mugs, and local gift cards.
A Community Success Story
Children and families enjoyed dedicated activities, games, and entertainment throughout the grounds, ensuring that the day offered something memorable for every generation.

Co-organizer Cody Swartz echoed those sentiments while looking ahead to the future: "This event showed the absolute best of Granville.
